Getting the right kind of nutrition is vital for good oral health. It not only ensures that the body receives adequate nutrition but also keeps a check that your teeth are in good health.
Immunity is essential to allow the body to fight off harmful infections. A diet that lacks the right kind of nutrients may make this quite tricky. Food rich in carbs and sugars can contribute to decay and plaque production that would eventually erode the tooth's enamel leading to the formation of cavities. However, such food is also part of a healthy diet, and children would need proper in-take of such nutrients. To control the amount of sugar that you consume and learn what food is right for you, read on.
We recommend encouraging your child to follow good oral health by demonstrating the ways to brush at least twice a day and floss once a day. Parents can also take their children for regular dental check-ups, and ensure that they avoid sugary juices and food.
1. Fruits and Vegetables
While many parents often give their child quick snacks that are rich in sugar and carbohydrates, try replacing them with fruits and vegetables for a change. Examples of food rich in vitamins and minerals are pears, apples, melons, celery, spinach, and cucumbers.
2. Cheese
Cheese is an excellent food that's good for your dental health. You can serve cheese as a snack or with salad. Cheese helps trigger saliva production, allowing it to wash away particles from the mouth with ease.
3. Salmon and other types of fish
The presence of Omega-3 fatty acids in fish is rich in Vitamin D, which is essential in keeping your teeth and bones healthy.
4. Low-Fat Yogurt
Yogurt is rich in calcium. Calcium plays a significant role in ensuring that teeth are healthy and strong. Add a few berries to yogurt for extra nutrition, and your kids will love it.
In addition to eating food that's healthy, following routine brushing, flossing, and check-ups are essential to keep plaque and other debris away from teeth and gums. Visit our Palo Alto Pediatric Dentist, Dr. Michelle Haghpanah, to know more. Call our office at (650) 322 9837.
